Curling in 2014-15

To All Glen Meadows Curlers:

I bet you are all wondering what will happen for curling this fall now that the Glen Meadows Golf & Country Club have initiated development plans for the golf course and curling club.  I am sure the Open House held at the end of April left most of you a bit bewildered; there were a lot of unanswered questions and I suspect most of you went away speculating on the future.  Your Executive were equally confused and concerned, so we arranged a follow-up meeting with the Glen Meadows management to get a deeper understanding of what might happen and what we as curlers can expect in the near and long term.  I am happy to report that we did meet with the Glen Meadows this week and there were some positive results from that meeting which I want to pass on to you.

To start with, some good news – there will be no cancellation of curling in the short term.  The entire 2014 – 2015 curling season will proceed as it normally has in the past.  Curling will commence on the weekend of 27/28 September with an ICE BREAKER program and regular league play will commence on Monday, 29 September.  Curling will continue all season, ending with the last day of curling on 27 March, 2015.  Plans for bonspiels, clinics, turkey shoots, etc can all proceed as they have in the past.  So, don’t hang up those curling shoes yet, we expect to have a great curling year starting this fall.

Some of our curlers have expressed concern Glen Meadows might close the rink before the end of the curling season.  Please rest assured that we have a firm commitment from Glen Meadows that they want to stay open for the entire season.  However, for any of you who still feel uncomfortable, Glen Meadows have agreed to accept payment for fees in two instalments – September to end December then again for January to March.  Having arranged this with them, your Executive are very confident that Glen Meadows will honour their commitment to remain fully operational throughout the upcoming season.

Regarding the long term of curling at Glen Meadows – we are working with Glen Meadows to see if there are options available to keep the club open indefinitely.  Glen Meadows are very keen on alternative ideas that would meet their needs while also meeting the desires of the community.  Your Executive will be working towards this goal over the summer and throughout the next year.  It will not be easy to accomplish, and frankly it may not be achievable in the end, but rest assured that both Glen Meadows and the Glen Meadows Curling Assocition are going to try to make it work.

That leaves us with the middle term – what happens for the 2015 – 2016 season?  We anticipate that Glen Meadows' initial plan to develop Glen Meadows will take a fairly long time to come to fruition.  There is no guarantee, but our best guess is that there will be a 2015 – 2016 curling season at Glen Meadows even if we are not successful in our long term goal of saving it for perpetuity.  So, once again, don’t hang up those curling shoes!

Curlers, we really need your support to keep curling viable at Glen Meadows.  Don’t let the hype of a possible future change to Glen Meadows keep you from curling this upcoming season.  We need everyone to come back for 2014/2015 so we can show that there is ample interest to keep curling on the Peninsula.  We have an uphill battle with politicians and developers to prove a curling club is essential in our community.
What can you do to help? We require information from you as soon as possible. We ask all curlers to notify their league director of their intention to return in the fall.  League Director contact information is available by clicking on this link: or go to - About Us - Club Executive.
Please send an email or phone your league director today, we need your help. Thank you and all the best!
