News Flash “Kerry Park Men’s League Open Spiel Feb 9-12”

In response to a notice from Kerry Park for more teams, our Competitive League gathered four players as a last minute entry. Within a few days they were on the ice, competing against mostly younger teams. Lawrence Woytowich alleges that Lynn Wilson, Wayne Scott and Ken Wigbers maintained such a high level of accuracy that during the four days his basic requirement was only to guard the teams exceptional play. By Sunday morning they were looking forward to reaching the A-Event final, needing a victory over Kerry Park’s Wes Craig. Once again Glen Meadows was in front and out playing the opposition. However two ends of clearly missed last shots by Craig resulted in wicks to the four foot negating some high scoring GM possibilities and the victory. The very apologetic Craig team commented that as the home team they had gone to church that morning. Even with a disheartening loss, the team returned home with some excellent prizes, Sat & Sun free meals, and a fun four days of curling against teams never encountered in master /senior curling. Team comment; “Incidentally it was very encouraging to see a very young Juvenile Boys team win the C-Event, not only from the point of competitive play but personal on ice conduct”.

The Esquimalt Jan 3-6 Masters Open was dominated by Glen Meadows Masters winning the A, B & C Events. In the A Event once again the team of Dave Bolster, Gordon Schnell, Bud Taylor with Glen Canning throwing lead rocks and skipping put on an entertaining display of upsetting the local favorites. The perfect record of 6 wins clinched the A Event with a win over the seasoned Gallaugher provincial playdown team from Mill Bay. Canning’s only scare was in the semi-final when they needed to score 3 in the eighth end to move on to the final. After the great run last month at JDF, it’s obvious this was not a onetime lucky run and this team is ready to take on any opposition. Bolster attributes their success to the combination of precision weight and Canning’s crafty game strategy.

The B Event was won by Jack Campbell, George Pransky, Ron Gardner & Ken Stevenson with a nail biter victory over the Team Marriam also from Mill Bay. This was their only close game where Campbell needed to draw the four foot in an extra end. Campbell’s comments were his team was playing so well he only needed to make half of his shots to stay in the games.

In the C Event John Demeriez, Stu Carmichael (Gordon Erwin), Ron Sera, & Steve Muzyka won their final over the favoured Sheepwash team from Victoria. Team Demeriez’s victory was great come back, being down 4 pts half way through the game.

This week was certainly an acknowledgment to the Glen Meadows Masters.
